How we teach

Individual goals. Comprehensive musicianship.

Technique, reading, theory, ear training, repertoire, creativity, and performance are not separate subjects. They reinforce one another when they are taught as parts of the same musical language.

Lessons are adapted to the student’s age, experience, personality, and musical interests without losing the larger goal: becoming an independent, capable musician.

Great performance by all the students! Especially enjoyed the groups playing together with guitar(s) and piano. The music selections displayed a wonderful mix of old and contemporary-jazz, ragtime, Mexican folk, and classical to name a few! Delicious spread of food and desserts afterwards.

Mr. Evan is such a gem. He makes learning piano rewarding and fun. As a total beginner, it was encouraging to be able to play songs so soon into the lessons and be able to learn the music theory as we went. He asks great questions to figure out what you need to be successful and gives personalized tips and tricks. It's hard to find great teachers. I'm so glad to have found Mr. Evan.

I’ve been taking piano lessons from Evan for three months now, since February 2025, and I’m really enjoying it. He actually took the time to ask me what I wanted to learn, and he came up with a learning plan that fits my style just right. In just a few months, I’ve picked up the basics of chords and can play two songs that I love. Evan makes everything super easy to understand, and he explains each step along the way. I really like his chill yet focus approach - It’s flexible enough that I can have fun while still feeling dedicated to learning. I’d definitely recommend him!

Our kids (ages 9, 9, and 6) have been taking lessons with Evan and Player One Music Studio for almost four years. In that time, they’ve gone from having zero experience to being able to sight read, play various classical and pop music pieces, and are also working on developing perfect pitch. We love attending the three annual piano recitals P1MS hosts. They’re a great opportunity for the kids to build confidence playing for an audience (mostly other students and their families), as well as build community with the other students and their families. Evan has a great rapport with the kids and he manages to keep lessons not only engaging, but also tailored to the skill and aptitude of each child. After each lesson, we’re able to access their updated practice “homework” from P1MS’ online platform, where it can be easily viewed and printed. We also love the flexibility of in-home lessons - especially with multiple kids back-to-back - so we can continue with homework and other activities while each child is cycling through their piano lesson. We’re going to miss working with Evan and P1MS due to our upcoming move. We highly recommend them to anyone looking to take their piano skills to the next level!

I’ve been taking lessons as an adult at Player One for about 3 months now and I’ve made HUGE progress in the last 3 months. If you don’t want to read the rest of this long review, just know that Player One has the perfect combination of engaging lessons that mix a little bit of everything you could want. It led to incredible progress for me in a short time. I’ve been trying to learn the piano for the better part of the last 20 years of my life but I always fell into the same problems. I’m sure many adults out there can relate. I would get a piano again, download an app like FlowKey Pianote, maybe buy an Alfred or Faber method book and slowly work my way on my own through the book whilst trying to play songs through rote memorization - thinking it’s about brute force to learn when to press what keys. Inevitably I would drop off from life or just being frustrated by lack of progress. What changed this time was I decided to take weekly lessons and do things the right way. To be frank, I actually had *another* teacher before player one and while it was better than self-teaching, I just felt like the lessons were unstructured and almost like I was creating the curriculum. I made decent progress but really felt like I needed a more professional and robust system with a real professional music teacher. Enter Player One Music Studio. I found them through googling for ‘piano music studios’. You see I wanted an actual “music studio” that would have recitals, the whole “she-bang” one might say - a structured learning system. Evan had the piano pedagogy degree from CSUF and I was able to find some videos of him performing and he was CLEARLY very talented at the piano so I ended up scheduling a trial lesson where we discussed general goals and I learned more about the system. Immediately from the first couple lessons I could tell this was perfect for me. First, they have a website where I can login and see what assignments I have from the previous lessons. I log my practice time and more importantly I have all the key assignments that we did in the last lesson right there (Evan would be notating these during the lessons, freeing me to just listen and not take notes!) Second, the lessons were just awesome! We would move from scales to songs to hand independence exercises, never staying on one thing for too long or short a time. Enough for me to show my progress on it, him to provide corrections or some comments, then what to do for next week to continue progress. I personally loved just how dense the lessons were and it just felt so guided and structured. P1MS has a levels system that is a gradual increase in difficulty on different musical things like scales and arpeggios. This combined with Evan’s various assignments and repositories selections over the last 3 months has allowed me to already play the Minuet in G from Bach and now I’m working on Mozart K545. I NEVER would have dreamed of playing this well in 3 months. We just started working on some sonatinas from Beethoven and Latour and I’m VERY excited for the future. Now, I don’t want you to get the impression that the lessons are this super rigorous fast diatribe of piano stuff. Sometimes they are, but I’m confident it’s because Evan is amazing at making the lessons work for the person in front of them. They can just be silly sometimes too and we go on a tangent on some musical thing. It’s really a joy to be able to make good progress on the piano and still feel like lessons are just FUN. That’s probably the highest honor I can give to a piano studio. I didn’t quit yet either. That’s probably the second best. Give them a trial lesson if you made it this far reading this. Fantastic piano studio!

Our 3 kids have benefited and grown in skill and appreciation of music because of their piano teacher, Evan Kliewer. He is very knowledgeable and knows how to connect and help each child thrive in their own abilities. He is patient and will offer great advice to support each child. We are lucky to have had Evan be a part of our children's lives for the last 3 years. I would highly recommend Player One Music Studio for their excellent service and lessons for students of all ages.

I signed up for lessons with Evan on my 59th birthday. It has always been a dream to play again. I was in elementary school and lessons were boring and I had better things to do. I was very nervous that he would be able to teach an old dog new tricks. My lessons consist of making my way around the keyboard, learning chords, and the last ten minutes of my lesson, I get to learn one of my favorite songs that go along with the chords that he has taught me. This brings me so much joy. I am actually able to play Rocket Man by Elton John, and I still can't believe this is coming from my old fingers. Highly recommend and I can't wait to see where I am in a year. Who knows, maybe a concert?
